The May 18 eruption of
MT. SAINT HELENS
was the best-observed eruption
ever, and surviving volcanologists learned a great deal about the dynamics
of edifice collapse and formation of volcanic blast-deposits. I spent a few
days helping my USGS colleagues in their post-eruption work that summer, but
soon found myself in Indonesia, where a relatively small eruption of
GAMALAMA Volcano had caused the exodus of the island of Ternate. Most of my
efforts were devoted to convincing refugees that it was safe to return, but
during our stay on Ternate, my Indonesian colleagues and I produced the
first-ever detailed geologic map of any volcano in Indonesia. |
