I was invited to serve as the USGS "Resident Volcanologist" in Indonesia,
working with the Indonesian Direktorate Vulkanologi. I had intended to
focus mainly on
MERAPI
Volcano, but a major eruption of
GALUNGGUNG
changed
plans, and most of my time was spent monitoring this large eruption, and
learning about the dynamics of large explosive eruptions and the vast
economic impact of major ash-producing eruptions. This was my first
opportunity to witness plinian activity and to breathe and eat large
quantities of ash. |
