1991 : PHILIPPINES |

The 1991 eruption of
MT. PINATUBO was one of the Earth's largest eruptions
in this century, and had major impact on the Philippines and even affected
global climate. The cooperative work between the USGS and the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology to monitor the build-up to the eruption and to
successfully recommend evacuations saved thousands of lives and hundreds of
millions of dollars in property at adjacent military bases. I helped to
convince military authorities to order the evacuation of personnel from
Clark Air Force Base before the major devastation, and coordinated the USGS
efforts during later phases of plinian activity. |
